Yankee Swap Rules

1. 1

   Bring a wrapped gift. Set a budget in advance (typically $25–$50). Wrap the gift so no one can tell what it is.

   Draw numbers. Assign a play order by drawing numbers randomly.

3. 3

   Pick or steal. Player 1 picks from the pile. Every subsequent player can either pick an unwrapped gift from the pile or steal any already-opened gift.

4. 4

   Retaliation ban. You can't immediately steal back the gift that was just taken from you.

5. 5

   Steal limit. A gift can be stolen a maximum of 3 times total — after that, it's "frozen".

6. 6

   First player's bonus. After all gifts are opened, Player 1 gets one last chance to steal any gift they want.

Yankee Swap vs. White Elephant vs. Secret Santa

All three are gift exchange games, but they differ in style. Secret Santa involves drawing one person to buy for specifically. White Elephant and Yankee Swap involve group gift stealing — the main difference is regional naming and whether gifts lean gag (White Elephant) or thoughtful (Yankee Swap).
